Escape from Tarkov is a game that does not care about your comfort or your feelings. It throws you into a hostile city, gives you a few basic weapons, and tells you to survive. Escape from Tarkov is a hardcore extraction shooter developed by Battlestate Games. It started as an Early Access title back in 2017 and officially launched Version 1.0 on November 15, 2025, on Steam and the Battlestate client.

The game is set in the fictional city of Tarkov, a place ruined by political corruption, corporate scandals, and full-scale conflict. Two private military companies — USEC and BEAR — fight for control, while dangerous scavengers roam the streets looking for loot.

Your main objective is simple: survive each raid, collect resources, and escape the city.

Escape from Tarkov does not focus much on storytelling. There is a deep world behind the scenes, but the game never forces you to follow it. You get bits of lore through quests, documents, and traders. These give you a sense of what happened in Tarkov, but your real story is formed inside the raids.

When shots are flying and players are hunting each other, the narrative fades away. You are too busy fighting, healing, or trying to escape to care about anything else. The story supports the atmosphere well, but it is not the highlight of the game.

Gameplay Review – 8/10

Tarkov’s gameplay is the main reason people love or hate the game. It is complex, punishing, and incredibly detailed.

Realistic and Harsh Combat

Every bullet counts. Every sound matters.
Health is split into body parts, each with its own condition. Even a simple leg injury can slow you down and ruin your run.

There are hundreds of items to manage — ammo types, medkits, armor plates, backpacks, keys, food, water, and more. Inventory management feels like a skill on its own.

The game also gives you five gameplay modes, including:

• PMC Raids (main storyline and progression)
• Scav Raids (random loadout, less risk)
• PvE Mode (but sadly locked behind DLC)
• Arena Mode (fast-paced combat matches)

A True Hardcore Experience

The game does not teach you much. The tutorial is short and basic. Everything else is for you to figure out — ammo penetration, optimal routes, extraction points, weapon modding, and scav behavior.

You will die. Many times.
And every death hurts because you can lose your entire gear loadout.

Still, the thrill of finally surviving a tough raid feels amazing. The rush of extracting with a bag full of loot is unlike anything else in the genre.

Escape from Tarkov is gorgeous in a gritty and realistic way. Every map looks handcrafted, with detailed interiors, abandoned buildings, forests, industrial zones, and hidden rooms. Lighting is excellent, and weather effects improve immersion.

If your PC is strong enough, the game can look almost photo-realistic.

Audio Review – 7/10

The sound design is strong. Footsteps, rain, metal vibrations, distant gunfire, and the crack of bullets flying by your head — all of these help build tension.

There is minimal music, so most of the game is quiet. This silence adds to the suspense but can also feel too empty at times.

Value for Money – 5/10

Here is the most controversial part.
The base game costs $50. This is fine considering the content and replayability.

However, the biggest issue is the paid PvE mode. Paying an extra $30+ just to fight AI enemies without PvP is something that does not sit well with many fans. PvE modes are standard in many shooters, so locking it behind DLC feels unfair.

Tarkov is not meant for quick, relaxing gaming sessions. It demands patience, focus, and preparation. You often need to study maps, watch guides, learn ammo types, and even keep external resources open on another monitor.

This difficulty is what makes the game special. Every raid feels unique. Every fight is intense. Every win feels earned.

But this same difficulty also means Tarkov is not suitable for casual players.

Lag, Bugs, and Server Issues

Even after years of updates, Tarkov still struggles with server stability. Lag spikes appear randomly. Actions like reloading or looting can freeze for a moment, which can easily lead to death.

For a game this intense, network issues can be a major problem.
